Nutrition analysis and guided nutrition plans should be an essential part of every addiction recovery treatment program, whether the addiction treatment program takes place on an in patient or out patient basis.  And, those nutrition plans should be supervised by a physician or nutritionist.  Americans in general have health issues related to bad nutrition health due in part to habits developed over a lifetime, as well as readily available but very conflicting and confusing information.

There are so many different expert opinions about what constitutes good nutrition, and such a proliferation of misinformation from non experts everywhere from the internet, to well intentions friends and acquaintances. Everyone seems to have an opinion about what constitutes good nutrition.  While it’s never a good idea to take nutritional advice from those with good intentions but little qualifications, it is even more detrimental and impactful for those who are in addiction recovery.   For those who have lived years or perhaps even decades with substance abuse and addiction, qualified nutritional advice and plans specific to addiction and recovery is vital.

Research has shown that a majority of those with addiction disorder suffer biochemical, nutritional, and metabolic disorders. Addiction causes brain’s neurotransmitters to fluctuate dramatically and creates biochemical imbalances over time.  Only when nutritional deficiencies are addressed and a treatment program which includes a nutritional plan is implemented for at least 2 months of recovery, can biochemical imbalances become re-balanced.  Eating Healthy again helps those with addiction by restoring brain chemistry, helping the brain to heal more quickly while in the repair stage of addiction recovery and ultimately helps the brain to get back to functioning optimally. In addition to foods, there are specific supplements which can help the body to find balance again during recovery https://www.workithealth.com/blog/supplements-for-opioid-addiction

The 12 week treatment programs offered  at IAR  Integrative Addiction Recovery incorporate nutritional evaluations based on questionnaires and diagnostic lab work, performed in our clinic.  Our goal is to facilitate and witness success stories in those who come to our holistic health center to find addiction recovery.  The integrative health modalities and protocols we follow, including implementation of nutritional evaluation and customized nutrition plans for the entire 12 week programs, help to ensure recovery success every step of the way.    https://integrativeaddictionrecoveryne.com/nutrition-counseling-education/

Vibroacoustic Sound Therapy (VAT) is a science and evidence based treatment which uses mild sound and gentle body vibrations to reduce stress, relieve pain, restore balance and enhance the quality of life, particularly during addiction, withdrawal and recovery stages.

VAT frequencies range between 30Hz and 120Hz which are applied directly to the entire body through a Vibroacoustic treatment table.   VAT use of low frequency sound waves of specific Hz combined with the gentle vibrations result in a process. This process generates vibrations upon the muscular, skeletal and nervous system which effects organs, tissues and cells. The human body is more than 70% water. In addition, sound travels more efficiently though water than air, which explains why VAT can so efficiently access the deepest recesses of the body for safe and noninvasive healing.

Vibroacoustic Therapy is effective in treating cognitive and emotional issues.  VAT has been studied by researchers worldwide including the National Institutes of Health (NIH). Based on those studies, in 1999 NIH reported the benefits of using VAT for: Trauma, PTSD, Anxiety, Depression, Physical Injuries, Brain Function, Cognitive & Creative Enhancement, COPD, Asthma, Insomnia, Stress Reduction, Parkinson’s, Mitigating the impact of conventional cancer treatment, Reduce Fibromyalgia, Calming and Reducing Cravings of Addiction.

While the system of technology we use in our clinic may seem like a new piece of technology, VAT tables have been used clinically for both physical and mental health issues since the 1960’s. Along with pain management,  VAT can also greatly support the physical recovery of someone trying to transition off of drugs and alcohol.

VAT is just one of the many exciting therapies offered in our Integrative Addiction & Recovery programs. If you or a loved one is seeking a holistic approach to healing which is tailored to individual needs, call us today at 508 366 6630 for a consult.

IAR uses an Integrative approach to addiction treatment. We are so committed to the concept of integrative care,  we even used the term in our name!

But what does integrative mean?

An integrative approach involves bringing BOTH conventional evidence based and Complimentary Alternative Medicine (CAM)  together in a coordinated way in addiction treatment. In effect, it’s a multi-modality approach.  IAR uses both evidence based modalities like counseling and our holistic, CAM therapies to treat addiction. Integrative Treatment also means that our team of providers deliver physical health treatment along with mental health and addiction use treatment, all at the same time in highly structured and coordinated programs.  We do this because those who have suffered substance abuse issues often have as many physical and health issues due to the impact of substance abuse, as mental health issues. More than 50% of those who abuse drugs and alcohol are shown to have at least one significant mental health illness as well.  IAR integrates individual and group addiction recovery counseling, mental health counseling, nutritional evaluation guidance and meal planning, genetic DNA lab testing, long term support groups and many other holistic treatments currently in use by our clinicians and therapists, all within the framework of a conventional healthcare clinic.

The World Health Organization (WHO) defines health as “a state of complete physical, mental and social well being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity” This definition of health matches the vision and focus of the health programs we’ve provided at our holistic health clinic for nearly 17 years in Westborough.  Our clinic motto is emblazed upon our wall and greets everyone who has found their way to our nurturing, supportive center.  It simply states,  ‘Holistic Health (whole being health) is only achieved by healing the mind~body~spirit ‘  This is the same vision and integrative approach we are happy to finally introduce and offer in our addiction recovery programs to those seeking refuge and help from the storm of addiction.

What is Compassion Fatigue? https://integrativeaddictionrecoveryne.com/what-is-compassion-fatigue/ Mon, 04 Feb 2019 19:06:17 +0000 http://integrativeaddictionrecoveryne.com/?p=27406 The post What is Compassion Fatigue? appeared first on Integrative Addiction Recovery.

Compassion Fatigue Vs. Burnout.

While Compassion Fatigue is similar to Burnout, which it is often compared to, it very different. Burnout can occur in any profession and is often connected to long work hours, work load, poor pay, lack of professional recognition and low job satisfaction. Burnout often results in physical and mental exhaustion, negativity towards the work, clients and themselves. Those experiencing Burnout often leave jobs they feel lack purpose or meaning, which they are  unsatisfied with in general.

Compassion Fatigue has been described as the “cost of caring” for others in emotional pain (Figley, 1982). Compassion Fatigue is specific condition common among individuals who are either consistently exposed to trauma or work directly with trauma victims.  Those suffering from Compassion Fatigue are impacted by work with clients where compassion/empathy are necessary tool of the profession, care or advocacy work.  Compassion Fatigue often has no connection to feeling unsatisfied with the actual profession, or even the clients or patients they serve. There is a kind of emotional contagion which occurs due to secondary trauma (caused by bearing witness to the trauma of those they are caring for) and burnout combined.  This secondary or vicarious traumatization is a negative transformation in the self of the trauma worker or helper, which is a result of empathic engagement with the person or animal which is traumatized.  Think of the last time you watched the news and saw a story which disturbed you greatly and stayed with you for days. Perhaps to such an extent that it caused you initially to get up and turn the television off.  For those who work in the helping professions, including  First Responders, Nurses, Doctors,  Veterinarians, Psychologists, Therapists, those who work in animal care, animal advocacy and rescue, or for those who work in social justice and even home care providers, there is no opportunity to just turn the television off. This is the world they must function in, every day. Our programs were designed to ensure those who show so much compassion and care for others,  can begin the journey of healing and caring for themselves, in a soul supportive and nurturing environment.

IAR provides individual counseling in order to enable you to better understand addiction disorder, and recognize unhealthy thought and behavior patterns while you discover underlying causes.

Therapeutic processing facilitates recognition of triggers and will open the door toward developing tools for emotional regulation and resilience.

During individual sessions, counselors co-create treatment plans which chart objectives in reaching realistic and achievable goals, setting timelines for goals, while working to diminish behaviors that deter or sabotage progress towards recovery goals.  Our counseling philosophy is solution based.

IAR group counseling uses two basic and fundamental methods in group counseling; process and skills acquisition & education methods.

Group counseling is a vital and proven therapy method for individuals suffering from substance abuse. Our small groups are comprised of 5-10 clients facilitated by counselors, and are designed to create an open and trusting environment for clients to share their struggles and concerns in addiction and in recovery. Group counseling allows clients to develop their interpersonal relationships with other like-minded individuals, developing self-awareness and learning how they relate to others in addiction programs on a deeper level. Our group therapy methods include the extremely effective and evidenced based Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT) methods, which are proven to aid in recovery of addiction and co occurring mental health issues.

Treatment Programs

Support groups are different from group therapy. All IAR Addiction & Recovery Support Groups are ‘closed groups’ available only to current and previous IAR clients.

Our support groups are private, confidential and are not open to the public. For those who have found community, support, and success with IAR this is the perfect long term care option. Unlike group therapy sessions, IAR support groups are a process group for those in recovery. A support group provides a place where clients can find a safe haven where they are free to be honest, open and vulnerable in sharing catharsis as we continue to learn how to express feelings along with life joys and trials with those who have traveled a similar path. Statistics show that when you practice a program of recovery, which includes a peer support group, you are more likely to maintain recovery.
